Another big loom

Last week we assembled our other big loom. It took 8 people to fit all the beams in the right places. Soon a very exciting project will begin in this loom...

Welcome Tova

We have a new weaver at the studio! Tova is working at the studio this fall primarily to learn Helena Hernmarck's weaving technique and be part of the work on "Passing Fall". We are so pleased to have her with us, welcome!

The beginning of Passing Fall

Here are some more pictures of the first tentative steps of Helena Hernmarck's "Passing Fall". As one might suspect on the name there will be some great colors in this weave. So far the weavers, Ebba and Tova, are working on a mist at the bottom of the picture. More pictures will come as the weave is created in the loom...

News from the studio

Exciting things going on at the studio to say the least... We are just getting started on a very interesting project with Helena Hernmarck. I'll publish some pictures later this week on the blog. And in September the other big loom will be set up for another exciting project - but more on that later on.

I sometimes wonder if it is possible to have this much fun and still call it work...

Another thrilling thing is that I finally bought a wall hanging in appliqué technique by Sofia Widén that I have been eying for more than two years now! I found it in an antique store south of Stockholm and it is a real beauty. It took some time to gather the courage and money to make the buy.

A couple of weeks ago I found out that I had gotten the research grant I applied for. So now I will continue my research about Sofia Widén! When I found out the good news I decided that now was the time to make the big buy.

So here it is; Sofia Widén's "Karabinjärer" from 1956.

In the new research project I am going to look closer at the printed fabrics that Sofia Widén designed in the 1950's. They were sold individually as well as being used as an important component in her wall hangings in appliqué technique. This can also be seen in this piece. Two of the soldiers helmets are made out of a fabric called "Domino" and on a soldier's body is another fabric called "Katedral" ("Cathedral").

It is wonderful to see all of the small details of the wall hanging. My favorite of the moment is the long shape of the legs and knees.
